I hope you are all well! Still revising and whatnot but I’m alive lol! I’m also LOVING this gorgeous weather in London.
Anywayyyy, today’s post is gonna be a little short but I believe it will be helpful. This one is about my top 5 oils and/or butters. Oils and butters are ESSENTIAL in my hair regimen. I know some people don’t rely on them too much but oils and butters have been vital in maintaining my thick hair and keeping it healthy. I use oils and butters for loadssss of things such as hot oil treatments, sealing, adding an extra ‘oomph’ to my deep conditioners, detangling, softening the hair etc etc! The upside is that all the oils/butters I’m including in this list can be used on the skin and some can even be used for cooking. So here we go…
- SHEA BUTTER – my love affair with shea butter runs very deep! This is one of my favourite products and it’s probably my favourite sealant. I particularly love to use this when it’s really cold (e.g. London in the winter) or when it’s really humid (e.g. Lagos all the time). It also has SPF properties to protect your hair from the sun as well as Vitamin E which is often used for healing damage on the hair shaft (and fading scars on the skin). It is also one of my favourite skin moisturisers!
- COCONUT OIL – now y’all know that coconut oil is my baby!! I genuinely don’t know what I would do without it! I use it for my hair, for cooking and for my skin. Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate the hair strand so it’s very good for helping your hair retain moisture. It also prevents protein loss, thus strengthening your hair. I use coconut oil as a sealant, a skin moisturiser, I add it to my deep conditioners, I use it for hot oil treatments and I use it to detangle.
- JAMAICAN BLACK CASTOR OIL – this slighty stinky, very thick oil is one of my favourite discoveries since going natural. Not only does it have antimicrobial (kills micro-organisms) and antibacterial (kills bacteria) properties, but it also helps to thicken and strengthen hair. This is what helped my edges grow back after damage from doing braids all the time. It can also be applied to eyelashes and eyebrows to thicken them.
- SWEET ALMOND OIL – this light oil is great for my ladies out there with fine hair. It is rich in Vitamins A, B and E, all vital for great hair and skin. I add it to my deep conditioners and I use it as a sealant when I want big hair or in the summer. I also use sweet almond oil as my nightly moisturiser because it is non-comedogenic, meaning that it won’t clog up your pores. It has given my skin a nice little glow and cleared up some slightly dark spots I had.
- JOJOBA OIL – this golden oil is greatttttt! Again, it is quite light so it’s a good sealant if you have fine hair. Apart from when I add it to my deep conditioners or hot oil treatments, my main use for this oil is when my scalp feels really dry. Jojoba oil is the most similar oil to sebum, the skin’s natural oil. So if you oil your scalp with it, your scalp can actually BREATHE as opposed to clogging your hair follicles with something that’s too thick.
